Found on ebay - a publicity still of Lauren Bacall. (sadly not from "To Have and Have Not", but the later move "The Gift of Love")
Who can fault a movie with a screenplay by William Faulkner, based on a novel by Hemingway, starring Hoagy Carmichael - and of course, Bogie and the young Bacall - she makes Scarlett Johannson look like a frumpy old maid...
“You know you don't have to act with me, Steve. You don't have to say anything, and you don't have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and... blow.”

And all of 18...
mor elike 20 I think. But your point is...?
Just amazement and admiration for the talent, beauty, maturity and latent sexuality she manages to pull off at such a tender age (two years prior at 16, she was an usher in a movie theater). Remember being kinda shocked when I first saw that scene- that something could be so blatant, and yet understated enough to get past the "moral" codes back then. Guess I should admit I had a minor crush on her some thirty years ago when I read her autobiography.
oh absolutley! She had Bogie exactly where she wanted him, both on and off screen... and she absolutley makes the movie
